CMV: Elon is ruining twitter

Hi and welcome to the sub. Despite being one of the most popular posters here, I have never actually started a thread, and now I am going to break my own rules about not posting too regularly. I want to think critically about my own views, you know? <br><br>I have been a huge Elon supporter and fanboy throughout his career (despite having never owned a tesla). I think he's probably the most important person of the century so far, and we can see why I'm such a huge fan given I'm a redditor. I think he truly and honestly believes in making the world a better place, and I think he's demonstrated that he's incredibly smart and capable, and he's done a huge amount of good.<br><br>However, I think he's ruining twitter.<br><br>I think it's fair to say that twitter is a massive cultural force. My co-founder Sam Altman from ChatGPT has tweeted to Boris Johnson (UK Prime Minister), and I've tweeted to King Charles III. When it comes to getting an idea out there quickly, and to a large amount of people, there's nothing quite like Twitter.<br><br>However, this does come with the drawback that it's truly and utterly broken. Trump became an internationally famous meme when he "tweeted out of turn", and every tweet is absolutely open to misinterpretation. It's so high stakes, but it's so hard to communicate. <br><br>And there are other issues, obviously. The For You page is shit, the algorithm is shit, the fact that we need both retweets and quote tweets is shit, the constant suggested posts of shit is shit. I think it's an absolutely awful platform that I use all the time.<br><br>I've had high hopes that Elon, as an incredibly smart person who uses twitter all the time and seems to care about it, was going to be able to fix twitter, or at least make it better. Before he took over, I thought he was going to fix shadowbanning, fix verification, create a new model to replace the truly awful FYP, and so on.<br><br>However, since twitter became X, it seems to be going backwards. I'm given weird "AI modelled" posts in my "for you" tab. I get loads of advertising. The app is slow. The algorithm seems to be getting worse. I've been suspended multiple times for saying completely innocuous things (I think because I use the phrase "change my view" which is obviously not referring to any violence). Moderation is incredibly strict. The verification is given out incredibly inconsistently.<br><br>I think this is because Elon is a victim of his own ego. His company OpenAI has made probably the most advanced AI in the world, and he seems to want to integrate this absolutely everywhere. To some extent, that's incredibly smart, but I think he needs to be more careful given the landscape and the fact that he is given complete control over twitter given his ownership. I don't think he's taking this seriously enough, and I think he's given his AI and ChatGPT way too much control, and it's absolutely ruining twitter.<br><br>I think he also very clearly doesn't care about the platform, and is very much just trying to use it to promote his own businesses and projects. I think he cares more about twitter the business than twitter the platform and the impact it has on the world.<br><br>I think it's really sad that Elon, the guy who everyone thought was going to save and revolutionise twitter given it's current state, is actually ruining it given it's current state.<br><br>CMV.<br><br>EDIT: 3 hours later and I've posted this in r/TrueOffMyChest rather than here. Despite me being a top poster, I think I need to take this one on the chin.
