Has anime quality gone downhill? With more time and bigger budgets that shouldn’t be the case.

First off, I’ve been watching Japanese media for almost 2 decades so I have been an anime fan for quite some time.

I’ve noticed the overall quality of anime has gotten worse. Sure, it will have its gems every year with shows that stand the test of time. The problem is that those gems are far and few between and recently, the good shows increase in an overall decrease of overall quality in anime that also have bigger budgets and better technology.

The good shows are still good, but increase in time gives less excuses for bad, mediocre and rushed product that’s been apparent in a lot of other entertainment, such as film.

I’m not talking about the abundance of different shows and the nich increase in viewership of anime in recent years. I’m talking about that the average anime show has gone down in quality.

Sure, that’s not a problem for viewers because they can just watch the good shows. But for the creators, that’s a problem. Good shows increase in quality also have increased in production time. For example, Attack on Titan had almost a 4 year gap between season 2 and 3. And the difference also shows. Not to mention the creators are in a lot of pressure to not only deliver, but deliver fast.

The time and budget shouldn’t matter as creators are given more time to deliver. It’d rather watch a show with a 4 year gap increase in quality than rushed garbage. I’d rather that than creators either burning out or increase in mental health issues. I’ve seen some creators vent about it on Twitter and the general consensus is that something has to change in order for anime creators to not only get better increase in quality, but also better working conditions and wages.

I’d like to hear your thoughts if you think anime has increased or decreased in quality. And why you think that has happened.
