What's the difference between consumer spending and consumption?

I just don't understand the difference between the two. Note that I have a very limited knowledge about economics so there's that.

From what I understand, consumer spending is when people buy services and goods, which sometimes can be productive (e.g., education, healthcare) and sometimes not (e.g., dining, movie tickets.)

However, it seems to me now that consumption is simply the using-up of what's already been bought.

Which leads me to wonder, when do people ever buy stuff but don't eventually consume it?

Is this another one of those examples where the difference is so small that it has no real-world applications?
