What's the most notable thing you learned about history from watching the History Channel documentary series - "Vikings"?

I've read lots of other "Viking" history books, but some things - like the fact that a Varangian could join the Varangian Guard and eventually become Emperor of the Byzantine Empire - were totally new to me.
