How would people react/reacted to discovering that society is built to a standard?

I’m inspired by games like Factorio and Dwarf Fortress, which are basically “invisible Legos” - this means that all the buildings and objects in the games aren’t polygon models, but just collections of invisible blocks that you can’t normally see. When you zoom in a sufficient amount, you start to see the Lego blocks that make up each object. I’m going to use this idea as the basis for my question.

Imagine that society has been built to a standard that is far too small for us to see with the naked eye, and that all the objects we own/use and the buildings we live in are all made up of these invisible Lego bricks. The bricks are perhaps a few millimeters in length, and each one is self-contained and capable of morphing into any form or function to serve it’s purpose.

What kind of reaction would this cause in people? How would it affect our society, and what new innovations would come out of it? Conversely, how would people have reacted if we had discovered this millions of years ago? Would we even still be living in caves, and would we have developed a lot more technology at a much earlier stage?
