CMV: If you are a constant lurker and do not upvote, then you are not helping anyone.

I think this has been discussed before but I am not going to go through the archives to find it. Essentially, this sub is facing a lot of constant problems. It is trapped in new, and if you have a post of any controversial subject, then you will hardly get one comment. I have had several posts get less than 5 comments, and I think this is why. I have even seen posts with 0 comments. And yet, these posts are still getting a large amount of readers, upwards of 10,000 people. Even if 1% of them upvote, that is still 100 upvotes, which is way more than the comments a post like this gets. There are countless examples of this on the sub, and it’s not just for me. There are plenty of examples of this in /r/changemyview.

And what really bothers me, is that people seem to think that they are a part of this community by just reading, but they are not. They are not helping, they are not participating, they are nothing. This sub is struggling because of these people. And I am not trying to make a sweeping claim and say that every lurker is part of the problem, but I think plenty of them are. If you are lurking and do not upvote, then you are just hurting the sub and making it harder for people to get their views changed.

There was a relevant comment made by u/Disshit recently.

Two problems: too many readers (5k+) who never comment. And the other extreme: commenters who choose to make neither an attempt to change anyone's view, nor do they ask questions that would increase understanding of the other side. It's very easy to tell how much effort someone puts into their comments.
