In 1956, a man named Imre Nagy came to power in Hungary. He was born in 1896 and had been active in politics for most of his life. He was heavily involved in the Soviet government in the 1920s and 30s and was in Russia during a civil war in Hungary that caused him to flee. Eventually, he became a strong advocate for Hungary, believing that it deserved independence from the Soviet Union. He was a key figure in the government after the war, serving in different positions for several years. Then, in 1953, he was named the Prime Minister of the country. He was extremely popular and was known for pushing to allow Hungary to be more independent from Russia. He was very involved in the protests against the Soviet Union in 1956, and when the protests ended, he was elected as the Prime Minister again. Eventually, the Soviet military came to power and Nagy was arrested. He was found guilty of treason and in 1958 he was put to death. Nagy was a great man who fought for Hungary and eventually lost his life fighting for the country that he loved.
