Five Nights At Freddy's is not the same as it was when we were in school

Let me just start off by saying that this is 100% true. It happened to me this weekend. The events are still so fresh in my mind that I'm actually feeling a little sick writing this, but I'm going to try anyway. I'm hoping posting it here will help clear my mind of this awful feeling that I have in my stomach.

Back in high school, a bunch of my friends and I thought it would be a great idea to break into the local Five Nights At Freddy's that had opened up a year earlier. We were the type of kids who thought we were invincible, and my friends and I had already pulled off multiple break-ins at other fast food joints, department stores, and even the local movie theater. It was always just a bit of fun and games for us, until we got caught and had to pay a fine to get out of juvie hall.

Looking back on it now, it's a complete miracle we didn't get arrested and have our lives ruined at an early age. It all just seemed like so much fun and games at the time, and I'm sure that we all had a feeling of invincibility that protected us from thinking about the consequences. I'm sure the fact that we were all pretty middle-class teens also played a major factor in the way things turned out, and now that I'm older I truly do regret the acts we committed and am grateful for the fact that we were treated so leniently by the authorities.

But this isn't a post about all the things we did in high school. This post is about what happened last weekend at Five Nights At Freddy's.

Back in high school, one of the things we did for kicks was break into the local Five Nights At Freddy's for a night. We were all huge fans of the game, and after a few drinks it just seemed like a fun idea. I don't remember exactly how we broke in, or who came up with the idea in the first place. All I remember is the feeling of excitement I had as we walked in through the front entrance and made our way to the bar counter near the front.

The first thing you see when walking in are the huge booths that line the walls of the restaurant. Of course, back in 2010 they were all decorated in the " devs style" of awkwardly stitched together cats. The kitchen was in the center of the room behind the counter, and the bar had a large stage in the middle of it for the freddy band to play on. We were all pretty drunk, and after looking around and taking some photos, we made our way to the stage in the center of the bar. We jumped around for a little while, and as previously mentioned took some photos. We then got bored and made our way to the back hallways to look around.

It turns out that Freddy's is pretty much laid out the same as it was in the game. There is a long hallway separating the kitchen from the back rooms, with the door leading to the vent system at the end. The vent system looked exactly as it did in the game, and we were all very happy with the accuracy of the game. We looked around in all the back rooms, and were pretty disappointed when we found that there were no suits hanging up in the changing rooms.

We spent a few hours taking photos, stealing souvenirs, and generally merrily trespassing in the restaurant. We were respectful and didn't cause much damage, but I'm sure the employees were pretty confused when they found pictures of us on the computers. We stole a few bottles of liquor and headed on our way, having a few more drinks at one of our houses after we got back.

Fast forward eight years, and it's 2018. One of my friends from high school, Tom, is getting married this weekend. The wedding is in our hometown, and I happen to be driving through on my way to the wedding, so I decide to stop by my old friend Mark's house the day before and hang out for a few hours. We haven't seen each other in a few years, so it's nice to have a chance to talk and catch up before the wedding. His wife left for the weekend to go to a yoga seminar, and she asked us to babysit their kids while she was away.

So, I get to his house a few hours before the kids get off school and we talk for a bit about what we've been up to. It's been a few years since we last saw each other, so there's a lot to talk about. His kids get off school a few hours after I get there, and they're both old enough that they can take care of themselves for a few hours, so we decide to take a little drive down memory lane. We look up the best restaurants in town that were around when we were in school, and compile a list of all the places we used to hang out at.

Obviously, the first thing on our list is Five Nights At Freddys. The kids kind of get bored with this activity, so we take them to a few places on the list and let them tag along with us while we reminisce about the past. We go to the local park where we used to play in little league, the bar where my friend had his 21st birthday, a few places we used to go camping at, and a few more.

After going to all these places, and having a few drinks at the bar, we decide to see if we can get into the local Five Nights At Freddys again. I don't know if it was the drinks, or if this was Mark's plan from the start, but we all pile into the car and head to the location of the old Five Nights At Freddys in our hometown. The kids fall asleep on the way, and we just leave them in the car when we get there with the radio playing. It was raining a bit that night, so we weren't too worried about leaving the kids in the car.

We get to the Five Nights At Freddys, and it looks *exactly* the same as it did back in 2010. I mean, it was like stepping back into the past. I couldn't see any differences at all. None of the decor had been changed, the layout was the same, the single security camera was still above the front door, the door handles were the same, and the windows were still large pieces of glass with the same paint on the glass. I couldn't see a single difference anywhere.

The only difference between this and breaking in back in 2010 was that we were no longer invincible. We didn't have the safety net of being kids who would just get a slap on the wrist if caught. We both had great paying jobs, and a great future ahead of us. So, we didn't actually break in. We just stood there, outside the front door, talking about the past. We talked about what life was like back then, and how much had changed since then. We talked about our families, friends, and career. It was a great experience reconnecting with an old friend, and I'm glad that we got to do it.

We talked for around 45 minutes outside the front door of Five Nights At Freddys. As we were finishing up, a car pulls into the parking lot. We figured it was probably an early morning cleaning crew or something, so we didn't think much of it. The car pulls up next to the door on the side of the building, and a lady with a bunch of bags gets out. She walks up to the front door and unlocks it. We wave her down and ask her what she's doing working at 3AM. She says she's the manager, and she always comes in early to make sure that "everything is in order".

She invited us in for a drink, and we accepted. We said we wouldn't be there long, as we didn't want to keep her from her work, but she assured us it would be fine. We walked in, and I have to say, it felt great to be back inside. I hadn't thought about that night in years, and being back inside brought back all the memories I had thought were long forgotten. We walked in and had a look around. It was just as we remembered it, and I pointed out some different things to Mark that he didn't remember. We told the manager our story, and she was pretty surprised herself. She offered to let us look around on our own, and said that she would be cleaning in the back so she wouldn't be paying attention to us.

It still felt like we were invincible, and we took this as an invitation to go back to the back rooms and steal more souvenirs. I'm not sure what had come over us, as this wasn't like either of us at all. I have a good career and a great family to support me, and I'm sure Mark is in a similar situation. So, instead of just taking another look around and leaving, we abused the managers hospitality and took advantage of it. We made our way to the back hallways, and started searching for souvenirs.

I don't know what happened after that. The next thing I knew, I was sitting at the bar near the front of the restaurant with a kid sitting next to me on either side. One was dressed in a yellow outfit, and
