I was 3 hours from buying a house today. I looked at the escrow paperwork and saw that 1% transfer tax is now 2%. I asked my mortgage broker about it and he told me to just pay the tax and a little more and I can close the deal and it'll be worth it. I asked him to explain and he said I was 3 hours from owning a house and there's no reason I should let a little over 12 grand keep me from owning it. At this point I was exasperated and wanted to know why my tax doubled. He told me it was because my fiance was added to the paperwork and there's a tax for married couples. I asked him why she was on the paperwork and he told me that my fiance wanted it and it's a little over 12 grand so why not just pay the tax so we could close and I could own my house. I asked him if a 2% transfer tax is even legal and he said he didn't care if it was or not. I effectively shit on his day and delayed the sale by telling him to take my fiance's name off of the deed or else. It would've been a house that I don't think anyone else is going to buy at the price they're asking but it's perfect for everything I need so I could've owned it then and there. Seriously, 2% tax? It's bullshit.

tl;dr: I was on the cusp of buying my first house but was told to pay nearly 12 grand more for a transfer tax because my fiance was listed on the deed and I had to delay the sale by taking her off of it. It's bullshit.
