I just had to kick out a student who clearly needed help and it broke my heart

I’m a relatively new teacher (6th grade English, for K-6 elementary school) and I’m still figuring out classroom management. This has been an issue all year, but today it came to a head.

I had a student get sent to me from another teacher for being disruptive. When this student came in, I gave them the standard talking to about how they need to calm down and not disrupt. Then we started our lesson and they just lost their mind. They were cussing at me (I don’t take that lightly, especially since some of my other students might), flipping desks, flipping their desk, screaming at the top of their lungs. I gave them many chances to calm down and I was talking to them calmly and telling them I was there for them and all that. But they just wouldn’t stop. Finally, I called the principal over and they got carted off.

That was at the beginning of class, and the rest of the class was kind of shell-shocked. They told me that the student who lost it is normally chill, and they think something might be wrong with them at home. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? I’m worried about this student, but also I can’t have them scare the other students or disrupt the learning environment. I really don’t know what to do.

Edit: I’m truly humbled by all the supportive comments, thank you so much. I think I need to talk to my school administration about getting this student (and some others) some help. I agree that I should have seen this as a sign that they needed help, and I should try to find a way to make them feel safer. It’s my job to help all my students have the best learning environment possible, and I should take that responsibility more seriously. Thank you everyone.

TL;DR: Had a student have a mental breakdown and had to get sent to the principal. I’m worried about them/what I should do.
