This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while now, and it really boggles my mind imagining how they would react.

Imagine for a moment that this massive superpower, with capabilities that far exceed anything they could imagine, just shows up out of no where and says “Hey, we’re here, don’t mess around with us.”

Imagine the Roman equivalent of the Pentagon getting satellite images showing the outline of the continental United States as well as the massive network of roads and cities that connects it all.

Imagine them sending a delegation of ambassadors to the United States and get stunned by the sheer height of the skyscrapers, the massive size of the cities, the massive network of highways and interstates that connect them all, the vehicles that carry thousands of tons worth of goods across the country at a fraction of the cost of anything that the Romans could ever hope to do, the massive amount of food that is produced every year that can feed billions of people, the massive military that is armed to the teeth with the most powerful weapons in the world, with equipment that is so technologically advanced the Romans wouldn’t even understand the basic principles of how it works.

They would be absolutely flabbergasted by the capabilities of the United States. It would be like being beamed from ancient Rome directly into Star Trek.

The biggest thing that I think would be shocking for the Romans would be the massive amount of food that would be available to the average American.

The ancient world was for the most part, absolutely strapped for cash. Most of their money went into feeding the military and the state, the largest expenses of the Roman state.

But in the process, they had to tax their citizens to oblivion, as well as wage war after war just to expand their territory and get more resources.

Starvation was a constant threat for most people, who had to grow and harvest their own food just to survive.

Now imagine one if the Roman Emperors being given a tour of one if the many food processing centers in the United States. Imagine them watching massive machines churning out box after box after box of food, being loaded onto trucks and being shipped out to grocery stores and restaurants all across the country.

Imagine Roman generals watching a B-52 fly by, with the ability to fly all the way across the Atlantic Ocean and back again and drop bombs that would flatten cities.

Imagine a delegation of Roman dignitaries being given a tour of the NASA control room at Houston, watching live footage of astronauts on the International Space Station.

The Romans would probably think that the Americans were some sort of gods, with abilities that far exceeded what they could even imagine.
