Long story short Napoleon's aggressive expansion of France caused the formation of the 3rd and 4th coalitions as well as the 5th, 6th and 7th coalitions. The 3rd 4th and 5th were easily defeated by Napoleon as they were not only technically inferior but also because they had an inferior commander. His fortunes changed when he invaded Russia which proved to be his downfall. From there he was defeated after defeats in Germany and later France. He was defeated at Waterloo which marked the end of the French Empire and the exile of Napoleon. He was an extremely flawed commander.
