My house was used in a kidnapping (as the stalking grounds)

This is actually my first post on this sub. I’m usually on true crime subreddits and the like.

I was inspired by another thread where the poster talks about how their friend was kidnapped right in front of them in their front yard. I think it might have been the same guy?!? (See below)

This occurred in 1998 in California, USA.

This story is very serious but I can laugh at it now so I will throw in some witticisms.

The police told us that we live in an “easy to watch” house. This house is on the corner of our block and only one of the four corners has a house on it; the other three are a park, a church, and a field. Meaning it’s very easy to sit in your car in the park and watch our front door. (I know this after we caught the guy but I’ll get to that in a minute)

There is a staircase in my house with the door to the outside at the bottom. From the top you can see the door. Anytime anyone was in their room they could see the front door and anyone at it.

My mom went up the stairs (maybe to go to her room), looked down and saw a man at the door looking in through the peephole into the house. She screams and gets my dad and they call the police.

The guy runs down the stairs, crosses the street into the park, jumps into his car and guns it away from the curb into oncoming traffic. The police get there in a few minutes and give chase but lose him.

They say that he most likely already had a kidnapping victim in the trunk (probably a young female) and was going to come back for a second and that’s why he stuck around.

Fast forward a week and another house on our street gets hit except the kidnapper gets in the house and kidnaps a teenage girl. She was brave and left her phone behind. A text came in asking who was at the door. I think he said something about being UPS and she ran downstairs to open the door. He immediately ran in the house and up the stairs to her room and grabbed her.

This poor girl and presumably whoever was in the trunk was driven to a cabin in the mountains.

The police were able to track the kidnapper’s phone and found the cabin. The police and FBI swarmed the cabin and completely surrounded it. The kidnapper knew he was surrounded and took the two girls into a bedroom and told them to stay quiet. The police were able to hear him talking about how he was going to shoot it out and was preparing to blast his way out.

The police burst in the house and there is a shootout. A SWAT officer was critically injured but the kidnapper was also critically injured. While he was being loaded into the ambulance he went into a full blown panic attack and kept screaming, “Why did you shoot me? Why did you shoot me?”. He died at the hospital.

The police never found out what his motive was. They found some sort of shrine to Ted Bundy in his house. And that the girls were meant to be his “Bundy Brides”. So yes they most likely would have been murdered.

The house where the kidnapping happened? That was my friend’s dad’s house. I spent a lot of time there because I was very good friends with his daughter. In fact we went to the same college.

The father, my friend’s dad, had been in the hospital for a few days. My friend was getting strange phone calls asking if he was there?!? The kidnapper had actually been inside the house three days before the kidnapping. The dad had actually been in the bathroom. The kidnapper was looking around the house and when my friend came out of her room he quickly ran out the front door and down the stairs before she could see.

So the short version is that a kidnapper was watching our door, was scared away and then a few days later kidnapped two girls from my friend’s dad’s house. The police found the kidnapper’s lair and engaged him in a shootout where he was mortally wounded and later died.
