Having worked in corporate IT, I have witnessed, met, and even been myself a victim of a phenomenon that I’d like to introduce as “Highly immoral, unmoral, disrespectful, and possibly criminal code” which I’ll call HMUCC for simplicity.

Meaning of HMUCC: Any digital product or code that was written by an employee, using the company’s resources, with the intention to get the work done as quickly as possible and that was left behind without any explanation and without any comments for the next guy taking over the project to understand what this smart and cool piece of code was doing and what was the idea behind it.

I think everyone will agree that a well written piece of code is a piece of code that, in conjunction with the comments, will allow a new employee to get up to speed at work in a couple of hours, and not by spending a couple of months reading documentation, and going through the previous employee’s emails to find out what was the idea about this smart and cool piece of code.

If you have worked in corporate IT, then you must have met a guy taking over the previous employee’s work, and maybe you have been that guy too…

I have been in this situation multiple times and, with every new project, I had to spend a couple of months to understand what, why and how, just to discover later that the issue was just a simple and elementary bug in lines of code. Also, I have found bugs and issues in the code that had nothing to do with the project itself and smart and cool pieces of code showing that the previous employee had a poor work hygiene and was not able to share correctly, and/or willing to share his work in a clean, organized and human readable format.

Resulting in wasting work time, and turning what should take a couple of hours to extend months and sometimes up to a year.

The purpose of this app, is to encourage employees to write clean, well-documented, and human-readable code, and to summarize the idea in comments for the next employee to take over and find it easy to get up to speed on the project.

This app is to be used by employees, and the way it’s gonna work is as follows:

1. Any employee can create an account using their email.

2. Once the account is created, the employee will receive a link to a web-page, hosted on a sub-domain, that he can access using the company’s ID, and that he will be able to access on his local computer not on his phone.

3. Once logged in to the app, the employee will be presented with a simple interface that will allow him to drop the code file and upload it to the web-page.

4. The app will give the employee a unique link to share with his colleagues.

5. This link can be used to share the code with colleagues and all they need to do is to click on the link, enter their company’s ID and the code will be displayed on the webpage with all the comments.

The idea is to encourage employees to write well-documented code by allowing smart and cool pieces of code to be shared quickly and easily with their colleagues, thus making them feel that their work is recognized and valued.

Whether a well-documented code is the result of a well-documented code or not, it doesn’t matter, because with this app, the code and comments will be shared publicly in the company, allowing smart and cool pieces of code to be quickly shared and thus making them easily accessible to all.

So if someone wants to get recognized for their work, and to make their work accessible to smart and cool pieces of code, they will have to document their work properly and comments it by hand and add comments in the code, and to keep it clean and organized.

The idea is simple and anyone can easily see it…

This app should be used by all employees in major companies and corporations, but it’s even more important to use it in an academic context where students are asked to provide their code alongside a report and have to explain this code and the comments in the report…

So, there you have it…

I’m no programmer, and I have no idea how easy or difficult it is to develop this idea into an app, but I’m sure that there is an smart and cool coder out there who will be able to get this idea and create something out of it.

Whether a well-documented piece of code is the result of a well-documented piece of code or not, it doesn’t matter, because with this app, the work will be documented and well-written, smart and cool pieces of code will be quickly shared and widely shared, and all employees will be able to work on a well-documented project without having to waste their time to understand what is going on…

And that will be all…

That’s my idea, I hope that someone will pick it up and make it happen…

Thank you, and have a great day…
