What do you think the worst thing about modern society is?

I was in my early 20's when the great recession hit. I had recently graduated from college and was working a job with a decent salary, but I lived at home with my parents so I could save up money. I had about 2/3rds of my first paycheck saved up when the recession hit, and suddenly my job disappeared and my parents were out a third of their monthly income. It was a scary time. My mom, who was a nurse at the time, was furloughed for 12 weeks straight and my dad was lucky to only have been furloughed a week.

When COVID hit, I was in a much more precarious position. I was working from home and still had a job, but I lived with roommates and was paying all of the rent myself. If I lost my job, I would have had to move out of my apartment because my roommate had a job that was deemed "essential" so I wouldn't have anyone to split rent with. I had already paid rent for the month of March before I even knew what was going on, and when the lockdowns hit I was stuck with an extra $800 on my credit card for the month that I couldn't afford to pay back. Luckily my parents were in a much better position by then and were able to give me the $800 I needed to pay rent for the month, but if the lockdowns had lasted longer, I would have lost my apartment and been forced to move back in with my parents.

Now I know some of you are probably thinking that I should have been paying more attention to my finances and building an emergency fund, and you would be right. But this was a unique situation where even people who were financially responsible found themselves struggling. In the time between the great recession and when COVID hit, the economy had recovered almost completely, and people had stopped building up their savings.

But beyond just how COVID affected individuals, the worst thing about modern society is the fact that we let our economy collapse. We had two major recessions in less than a decade, and the economy has never fully recovered. The great recession caused a massive increase in homelessness and people living in their cars. I saw it firsthand. It caused a massive increase in the number of people working low wage jobs. COVID caused millions of small businesses to shut down, leading to a huge consolidation of businesses and industries.

But instead of doing anything to prevent it from happening again, our leaders are too busy virtue signaling and playing politics to do anything about it. We are at the brink of another recession, and if we let it happen again we will never recover.
