He said he stabbed his girlfriend to death.

I have been a bartender at a small pub in North Carolina for the last four months. It’s one of those places where everybody knows everybody. It’s very small, which is nice; only around fifty seats for tables and then a small bar that has about ten seats for guests.

I work 2:00 to 2:00am, Monday through Saturday, and I’ve gotten accustomed to the late night regulars. There’s always the group of men who like to get drinks after work at 4:00pm, and the usual bunch of early morning regulars who like to get a few beers in before work.

But it seems like the night shift is always the most interesting.

One night, I had just opened up the bar. It was around 3:00am and a man walked in. He was tall and slender, wearing a black leather jacket and jeans. He looked around the bar, seemingly confused, and made his way to the bar counter.

I asked him what he would like to drink but he didn’t answer. He just stared at me. I figured he was just drunk so I waited patiently. After a minute or so, he spoke up.

“Oh, sorry. I think I might have the wrong place. I live in New York. I’m visiting with friends for the week. Is this place open all the time?”

I laughed and told him that we’re a 24-hour bar.

“Oh, damn. I wish there were more bars like this in New York.” He said with a chuckle.

I smiled and asked him again, what he would like to drink? He looked at all of the liquor on the top shelf and then said he was surprised that we were open this late. I told him we were a 24-hour bar, and our liquor license allows us to sell alcohol at any time.

We had a nice, casual conversation for a few minutes- nothing out of the ordinary; Mostly talked about the city he lives in, the weather, that kind of thing. He didn’t seem drunk at all, and he didn’t appear to have any red flags.

I gave him his beer and he paid with a card. When I brought him back his card, as a habit I always look at the name on a customer's card- just for a quick background check, and to make sure they are using their own card. His name on the card read, "Nathan LaPierre."

I continued to work, doing side jobs and the like and our conversation continued. He asked me if I had a boyfriend, and I told him no. He then asked how old I was, and I told him 22. He said he was 35.

I was starting to feel a bit uneasy, but I was sure he was just trying to get to know me. I asked him if he had a girlfriend, and he paused.

Then, he looked around the bar at all of the patrons and said, “I used to have a girlfriend. But she’s gone now.”

I thought that maybe she had passed away tragically or something, so I said I was sorry and asked what had happened to her.

“She went on a trip, and never came home.” Was all he said. I didn’t think it was appropriate to prod any longer, so we continued with small talk.

Throughout the rest of the night, he kept ordering more beers, and I kept giving them to him. He never once showed any signs of being drunk.

And then, out of nowhere, this:

He started talking about his ex-girlfriend again, but this time he said, “You know, I took my girlfriend on a trip, and I stabbed her to death.”

I don’t know how to explain how it felt, but when he said that, my blood just ran cold. I felt extremely uncomfortable and unsafe, and a weird feeling just took over my entire body.

I was frozen in shock, unable to say anything as he sat there. I thought that maybe he was just joking, or being sarcastic, but the way he said it just sent chills down my spine.

All I could think about was the fact that I was the only woman working that night and there were only around ten patrons in the bar.

I finally managed to say, “Yeah, I know what you mean.” And then I went into the back.

When I went into the back, I told my co-worker what he said to me, and she told me to go in the office and call the police. So I did, and when I called the police, they said they already had a call come in about him because one of the regulars in the bar thought he looked very suspicious.

The cops were already on their way. So all I had to do was wait until they got there. I told my coworker to please let me know when the police got there, so I could go out there and arrest him.

When she said the cops were there, I went out and the police apprehended him. They cuffed him and read him his Miranda rights. When they were escorting him out he just looked at me and said, “You’re beautiful.”

Turns out he had a warrant out for his arrest for second degree murder.

Nathan LaPierre, you had a whole life ahead of you, but now you’re gonna be stuck in a tiny cell, surrounded by concrete and bars. Don’t ever try to get a drink at 3:00am ever again.

Edit: WOW! I did not expect this to get so many upvotes. Thank you so much for your kindness. I don’t know how many of you have seen a criminal get apprehended, but I can say that if it happens to you, you will never forget it. It is one of the scariest things. Thank you all so much!
