Do men find random acts of kindness from women embarrassing?

My best friend is a guy and he always makes this joke when it comes to us driving somewhere, he always says, "I'm not letting you pay, that's embarrassing." Like, he refuses to let me pay for his meal, or pay for his transport, etc. He will literally laugh at me when I offer to pay for him. He would rather me stay home than pay for him to eat for himself. He would rather be sad and hungry than let me pay for him, and I don't understand why. I feel like money is just money at the end of the day? I want to help him so I give him some money here and there, but it sounds like he would rather die than accept it. He doesn't ask for it, I just give it to him, and he would literally turn it down. I just find that laughable.
