How to not subconsciously buy the big brand food products at an American grocery store

Usually, the name-brand stuff (Kellogg's, Quaker Oats, General Mills, and etc) is not on the shelves like you would expect. What you see is usually the store brand stuff on the shelves and in the advertisements. The name-brand stuff is usually up near the ceiling or down by the floor, so you don't see it unless you look up or crouch down and look at the bottom of the shelves.

Counter this by always scanning from the bottom of the shelves to the top. This also works when you're looking specifically for the cheap stuff, since it's usually placed in the same areas.

The reason they do this is so you don't see the name-brand stuff right next to the store-brand stuff, and therefore can't compare prices in a single glance. They do this so you're more inclined to buy the more expensive name-brand stuff.

EDIT: I should note that I literally just found out about this today, so I'm not some anti-capitalist paranoia nut. Honestly, I'm not even sure if this is true, because it sounds too good (or bad, depending on the viewpoint I guess) to be true.

EDIT2: I can't believe this blew up so much. I had no clue this was common knowledge, and I thought I had just discovered it. I use reddit as more of a way to kill time than as a way to communicate with people. I don't know what to say.
