“The guys at my workplace are feminine and the women are masculine,” said one of the guys at our workplace

I was on my lunch break at our office’s small cafeteria, sitting in the corner, eating my sandwich and reading. One of the guys from our team walked in and sat down at the table across from me, seemingly just for the sake of sitting there so he wouldn’t be alone.

He was pretty quiet, not making any tiny talk and just scrolling through his phone. However, he was the guy who had been very friendly to me and the other women/girls in the team ever since we first met him.

But all of a sudden, without any prior warning, he said: “The guys at our workplace are very feminine and the women are very masculine.”

I accidentally choked on my sandwich.

I then laughed out loud.

He laughed too, and I remember laughing so much that tears were running down my face. He didn’t seem to understand why I found it so funny.

He then elaborated: “Men in the team are really nice and very friendly and have very soft personalities.” He then named our boss, who is very understanding, caring and kind to everyone in the team and actually makes sure we’re all doing well and brings us cake and chocolate.

He then explained that the women in the team are very different. They’re the ones who are unfriendly, rough and very competitive. One of them was the same woman who had announced her pregnancy to the whole team and then proceeded to send an email to everyone telling them not to congratulate her on her pregnancy.

And then there’s me, who’s very socially awkward and unable to express myself and has a resting bitch face.

That was when I realized that I was the only woman in the team. I’ll admit that I’m not always the most approachable person, but I don’t try to be mean or rude or purposefully unfriendly. I’m just not very good at socializing and expressing myself to people I don’t know well.

We then proceeded to talk for a while and have a nice conversation. I remember having a nice time and feeling relieved and happy that someone in the team was able to openly talk to me about it.

It’ll be interesting to see the reactions once my pregnancy starts showing and how they’ll react to my pregnancy announcement.
