I travelled to Rodriguez island about a week ago, and I feel that it may be a solid contender for the worst place on earth. Rodriguez island is a territory of Mauritius, and is located about 650km east of the mainland of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It has a population of around 40,000 people.

The Rodriguez island is a small volcanic island with no beaches at all (the only island in the Indian Ocean like this). The island is not even visible from space.

Internationally, Rodriguez island is not known for anything, and Rodriguez island is probably best known for being a penal colony in the late 1800s.

In modern times, Rodriguez island is known for two things:

1: The island receives Rodriguez island gets 4,000 mm of rainfall every year, making it one of the wettest inhabited places on earth. And the island is also subject to severe tropical storms every year.

2: The island has Rodriguez island has what is called a "closed economy", where only a handful of international products are available, and are marked up in price by a lot. Moreover, there are frequent power cuts and water shortages. The island has no hospital, and if you get injured in an accident, you have to travel to the mainland of Mauritius which is only possible by plane on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and by boat once a week. There's a reason why they call it "The Alcatraz of the Indian Ocean".

So to summarize:

\---------------------------

Rodriguez island has no beaches and receives 4,000 mm of rain every year, and is also subject to frequent tropical storms.

There is a shortage of food and water, frequent power cuts, and no hospital on the island.

\-----------------------------

So, is it a contender for the worst place on earth? Rodriguez island may not be the worst place on earth, but it is certainly a strong contender.

But what do you think?
