My son asked me to stop Debugging while he was in the Womb.

I'm a debugger, it's my job to go inside computers and find the problems with the coding. So when E2 (my company) approached me with the idea of Debugging Human Minds I couldn't resist.

I mean, you get to go inside a human being's mind, (while they're still alive) and live their entire life in the span of a few minutes. I could have turned down the offer, but looking back I'm not sure I would have had a choice either way.

The technology had been given to us by an anonymous source, (or the devil himself for all I know) along with a very detailed instructional manual. With that, E2 was able to reproduce the machine in an upscale facility in downtown New York.

The process of Debugging a Mind was simple; you got into the machine, read the instructions of the person being debugged, and if you found a problem (or a bug) as we call it, you had to fix it. If you couldn't fix it, then it was out of your hands.

Now I know this sounds weird to anyone reading this, but trust me when I tell you this was real and it happened. I'm only telling you this now, because the world needs to know. This is my confession. My great mistake.

I debugged my first mind just after new years in 2000. It was a young girl who I call my first love. Before Rachel had given birth to our son, Simon, she had been my first debug. She never even knew I was in there and when I left I had given her the best life I could in the few minutes I spent inside her mind.

E2 didn't know of any of the changes I made, but they were happy that I had fixed the bug. I was new to the whole debugging thing, but I had training and experience, so I was the best to get the job done.

After my first debug was a success, I had the job for life. I debugged entrepreneurs, actors, artists, and even the mentally insane. I saw the world and lived countless lives. I lived as a woman and learned to appreciate the value of lipstick. It changed me.

All that changed though, one fateful night. It was the night I had to debug my own son. I never should have accepted the job, but after years of having no bugs to fix, and months without a job I couldn't pass up the great opportunity in front of me.

I hid my relationship to the boy from E2, and I took the job. I had to know what was wrong with my son. Rachel had been telling me for months that Simon was mentally ill. He kept talking about the woman in his dreams, but I knew it was bullshit. He was just acting out for attention.

Simon was my only child, and up until he had turned 5 years old, he had been perfectly normal. I had only debugged one child before and I didn't want to do it again, but for my son I would have done anything.

I had seen the world and countless lives. I knew what the boy was feeling. It wasn't normal.

All that changed though, on the night I debugged him. I wish I could have talked to Rachel first, but I couldn't risk E2 finding out. Debugging your own child was forbidden. I had to do it.

I got into the machine and watched Simon fall asleep on the camera installed in his bedroom. I closed my eyes and read the instructions.

**Simon Walter Gruyere (SWG Debug) Instructions**

*Do not make any changes to SWG’s life. Debug only*

Appearing as a ten-year-old in Simon's mind was surprisingly jarring considering I was used to the feeling. His mind was a weird place though. I remember I was playing with Legos in his living room. (My living room) Simon Gruyere was 5 years old, the same age I had last debugged a child.

Debugging is a strange process. You know you're in someone's mind, but you still can't help but feel like you're really there. It's strange. When I saw little Simon crying on the floor, for a moment I thought my son was crying in front of me. I didn't want to just sit back and watch, I wanted to help him. I didn't though.

The instructions told me not to make any changes, but I could explore. I decided to see what was wrong with him. Why he was acting out.

I approached him. I was tall compared to the child.

"Why are you crying Simon?" I asked.

Simon wiped his eyes and looked at me. He trembled. I had never seen Simon so terrified.

"I-I was... just playing with my toys sir." He said.

"No, why are you crying Simon?" I asked again, kneeling down next to him.

"I-I saw her sir... She never leaves me alone, and I hate-"

"Just stop it! Shut up Simon!" A woman yelled as she stormed into the room.

I turned to see a woman standing in the doorway between the hall and the living room. I had never seen her before. She was beautiful, with long, black hair and piercing green eyes.

"Wait, stop Simon!-"

"Just shut up Simon! Do you know what you just said?!" She screamed, bashing Simon with a nearby broom. Simon started crying harder.

"No! Just shut up! You shouldn't say things like that Simon!"

Simon was screaming as she bashed him again and again.

"Just shut-"

Simon's eyes locked onto mine, as he screamed. "You came back!"

A cold shiver ran down my spine. "Simon stop! Please just stop before-"

"Simon, you wouldn't understand. I have to do this!" She yelled, bashing Simon again as he screamed.

"No! Please! Stop! Just stop hurting Simon!"

Simon's eyes turned cold as he went silent.

"Simon?"

"You came back. I've been waiting for you. I knew you wouldn't leave me forever."

"Simon, who are you talking to?"

"I'm talking to you! I've been waiting."

"Don't be silly Simon, I am right here-"

"Simon, please!-"

Simon started screaming as loud as he could as the woman slapped him across the face. Simon's eyes rained with tears as he ran from the room.

"Simon! What did you just do! Come back here!"

The woman chased after Simon as I watched. I couldn't do anything. I could only watch.

"Why did you come back?!" She yelled as Simon screamed for his life.

I had had enough. This was insane. Who was this woman? Why was she hurting Simon?

"Simon-"

"Simon, don't do that. Not now!" The woman screamed as Simon screamed louder.

Appearing as a man twice the age of Rachel in Simon's mind was surprisingly jarring considering I was used to the feeling. His mind was a strange place though. I was watching Simon play in an open field. (Not my open field) Simon Gruyere was 2 years old, the same age I had last debugged a child.

Debugging is a strange process.
