Over the weekend, the city of Hangzhou was put under a partial lockdown. No one is allowed to leave their homes in what China is calling a "zero Covid" policy. Reason is so China can control the spread of the latest Omicron COVID subvariant. And they are going to have a big tech show in a week and China obviously doesn't want any chance of COVID-19. They want to show the world that they have COVID under control.

They also apparently have an economic deadline so this lockdown on Hangzhou is probably going to hurt. This is going to be a big challenge for China as this is going to hurt more than ever. China is desperate to open up their economy but at the same time these lockdowns are going to hurt them even more, and China is running out of solutions.

Hangzhou is not just important because of this tech show either, it is also where many Chinese tech giants are located, among them Alibaba. So this is probably going to hurt their economy as well, which is really bad for the world, not just China.

China knows they need to open up but they have no way of doing so. Maybe they should just drop these lockdowns once and for all and get on with it. But I guess they won't.

It is so hard for China to open up now when they refused to open up in 2020. China is running out of solutions and there is no way out of this. China is delivering fewer jobs now and China is probably going to see even more protests with more lockdowns ahead.
