Legal question: If a store is accusing you of shoplifting, which you did do, should you answer their questions? Even if you are already facing criminal charges, should you cooperate with the loss prevention officers?

So, I'm not proud of what I did.

When I used to work in retail years ago, shoplifting infuriated me beyond belief. It was like they thought they were above the law. Except, when I fell on hard times, I found myself stealing out of desperation. I took food. I never felt comfortable doing it. I was caught and am facing charges.

I am wondering if I should have kept my mouth shut and not admitted anything to the loss prevention officers? Would that have helped my case? I really don't see how it would have hurt.

I know I'm going to get some comments about how I deserve what's coming to me.

I did a stupid thing, I made a mistake, and I can live with that. I can learn from it and move on.
