Older woman that travels alone and has a concealed carry permit.

So i travel alone a lot and I'm thinking about getting a concealed carry permit. I've never owned a gun and wouldn't be comfortable having one in my home so how would I be able to travel with it. What would I need to do to be able to do this? I have heard stories about woman laying their guns down at security and then picking them up after security. Is this true?
