Is Buddhism the only religion that tries to help people?

I've been reading about a lot of religions lately, and if you compare Christianity to Buddhism for example, then it seems like Christianity only cares about people going to heaven/hell, Islam seems to incite violence towards people who believe differently, Wicca/other paganism just seems to be an excuse to be a witch. Hinduism seems pretty good in teaching people how to be better, but it has a lot of restrictions and rules for people to live by, then there's Sikhism which is like the Christians but stricter.
This is all just from my own reading, I'd like to hear if I've got any of this wrong. It seems like all of these religions, except for Buddhism, are only about the "faith" aspect of it and not the "bettering yourself" aspect. Buddhism is the only religion that I know of that doesn't have a belief in a deity and has a lot of restrictions placed on its own followers. It also seems to be the religion that has the least amount of bloodshed, which is a big contradiction to all of the other religions. Even the Catholic church had a genocide in Africa.
I guess what I'm asking is, if I want to learn how to be a better person, should I read up on Buddhism? Or should I look to philosophy instead?
