Snapchat Filter Style Apps for Snaring Animals (for Zoologists)

Apps like Tinder and Snapchat have featured image manipulation (swiping, zooming, pinching, stretching, clicking and dragging, etc) for what feels like an eternity.

When I worked in veterinary medicine, we were swaddling, weighing, and sexing animals (baby possums, raccoons, baby snakes, owls, etc) that came in as orphans. Some animals were so tiny that you needed a magnifying glass and/or a sexing kit to differentiate between the sexes.

Some animals were not easy to sex, and the treatment or medical follow-up was different for males and females.

Some animals are so skittish that taking the time to swaddle/sex/weigh them in the same amount of time you have to carry out all of the other procedure steps is not practical.

So, what if there were apps for different types of animals that allowed you to take a picture of the underside or sexing organs, and then zoom and zoom and zoom, stretch and move the image until you could see better?

Maybe it would only be helpful for the common animals, and would just be a repository of images that could be browsed through, or perhaps it could be more AI, and the image would auto-adjust to show you the most sex-specific features.

I'm not a zoologist, but I know there are apps (perhaps from universities) for identifying insects, leaves, and other natural objects.

I'm not sure what the app would look like or how it would work, I just know that it would be handy.

So, if you’re bored and have skills in these areas, you may want to look into it.
