AITA for getting my friend fired?

I have a friend who started at my company 2 weeks after me. We have been friends for a few years and we work in the same department. Our company is very good about giving new hires a probationary period. It’s 5 months for new hires and 7 months for internal transfers.

My friend is terrible and figured that if he worked with me, he could get on the probationary period annulled and he could screw off all year. I told him that wasn’t going to happen.

One day, the new intern in our department was supposed to do an appointment with our boss. Our boss was sick at the last minute and my friend decided that since he was on probation, it didn’t matter what he did, so he took the intern out to a bar and did a bunch of shots with him. The intern was very drunk and had a car accident and lost his license. The next day, my friend took the intern back home, made himself wait outside, and the intern came out in a bathrobe. My friend said it was short but cute. They did drugs together and then the intern went back to bed and my friend left.

The intern never showed up to work after that week. My friend covered up for him and sent his emails to the people he was supposed to meet with and made up excuses for why the intern wasn’t at work. He also did his assignment for him several times.

I reported him to HR. He was investigated, put on a performance improvement plan, and then fired.

I feel guilty for getting him fired, but at the same time I should not have to cover up his gross misbehavior.

My friends other friends have been gassing on about how I fucking up bad and that I should have been a good friend and lied with him instead of getting him fired.

AITA?
