A few days prior to Christmas 2022, an AI program called Gemini Ultra, wrote 3 essays to 4 AP level high school courses and got A’s in all 4. It was the first instance of a program ever getting A’s in 4 AP courses, and it only took a few days to pass the tests.

To get into the most competitive class at the best universities in the world, you need to get all A’s in AP for 3 years straight. So, imagine if this AI was able to sustain its performance in all AP courses for the next 3 years. It would be able to get admitted to every top university, and it could complete a bachelors degree with 100% in all classes.

This might make you wonder, how far away we are from an AI that not only gets admitted to medical school, but also completes medical residency with an internship. One of the most competitive fields to get into residency in is neurosurgery. Usually, it takes a neurosurgeon 6 long years of residency with internship to become a successful neurosurgeon, and only a handful of people get admitted into neurosurgery residency every year.

Let’s say that in the next 6 years, it will be common for AI’s to finish medical school and residency. Will this be a reality? It’s hard to predict. But if you look at the trends for AI performance in other fields, it seems more than plausible that we could see it in the next 10 years.

Imagine the impact it would have on society if a top neurosurgeon, and an entire hospital staff could be replaced by a group of robots, and AI only costing a few million dollars to set up. It would be able to perform infinitely more surgeries than an entire team of neurosurgeons, with a success rate of 100%, and with precision of a million times that of a human surgeon.

This is just one area where AI is being applied, but what about all of the other skills that currently require a university degree? It’s clear that AI has already disrupted the coding industry, and that’s only going to get more and more pronounced. We are seeing instances of AI chefs transforming food, and coming up with new recipes. AI is already showing strength in the arts. AI top artists have been winning competitions in art and music, and AI news anchors are already a reality in some Asian countries.

My point is, we are already witnessing a transformation at least as great as the industrial revolution, and it’s only just beginning. You could even argue that AI and robotics is going to have a much greater impact on society, and in much less time than the industrial transformation had. There were nearly 100 years in between the first steam engine, and the first automobile, so what will humanity look like 100 years from now?
