I (17M) wake up, then go through my morning routine. I find myself with some extra time on my hand so I pack lunch. All I have is rice, cheese and by some miracle, a small can of tuna. I was just expecting to have rice and cheese, but that’s okay.

I pack it in a Tupperware, and put it in my bag. I grab my phone, wallet, and keys and head out the door. I get in my truck and head to school. I’m about 30 minutes early. I park by the entrance and walk in. I see the usuals.
I see Emily, the math whiz. She’s the smartest girl I’ve ever met. She’s taking calculus 2 at university level. She’s also currently working on a formula to revolutionize calculus itself.
I see Abby, the art whiz. She’s the best artist I’ve ever seen. We had to make posters for a school project last year and her poster was so good it looked like it was computer generated.
I see Matt. He’s the music whiz. He can already play the guitar, violin, piano and the trumpet. He’s currently learning the drums. He’s in our schools choir, band, and even strings.
I even see Chris, our sports whiz. He’s on our football, basketball and baseball teams.

I find myself to one of my friends, Jimmy. Jimmy’s kind of the odd one out. He’s not good at any one thing. Instead, he’s good at everything. He’s great at math, he’s good at drawing, he’s decent at sports, and even somewhat okay at music. But he’s not the best. But he’s also not the worst.
Jimmy’s sitting by himself. Usually, we’d have some other friends join us, but they’re running late today.

Jimmy looks up at me and grins “I feel like today’s gonna be a good day.”

I take a seat next to him “Why’s that?”

He shrugs “I dunno. Just a feeling.”

I shrug back “Maybe you’re right. Maybe it will be.”

Just then, the school principal walks to the speakers. He’s a generally friendly guy, and really likes the students.

“Hello students and teachers, this is your principal speaking. I’d like to introduce our newest transfer student. All of you know that we have a lot of smart, talented, and special students. So it’s no surprise that another one is transferring here. Please welcome, Kari.”

A girl walks out of the office. She’s wearing our school uniform. A simple, white and blue dress. It’s sleeveless, and doesn’t cover her shoulders. It’s also a bit short, but not to the point of immodesty.
She looks around awkwardly for a moment before her eyes landed on us. She smiled and walked over.

“Hey” she said, she sat across from us. “I’m Kari.”

Jimmy and I exchanged a look before I said “I’m Adam, and he’s Jimmy.”

She smiled. It was really cute. But I’d never admit that.

Jimmy asked “What’s your major?”

Kari thought for a moment “I’m not really good at anything.”

I furrowed my eyebrow “That’s strange. Why are you transferring here?”

Kari shrugged “My dad moved and the new house is near here. Plus, I heard the classes here are harder so I can get better.”

That made sense. I don’t know why someone would send their kid here if they’re not special, but that was their decision. Not mine.

The bell rang. Kari stood up “Well, nice meeting you guys. See you later.”

Jimmy and I stood up. “Yup. See you” I said.

Kari walked away. Jimmy turned to me “She seemed nice.”

I nodded “Yeah.”

I grabbed my calculus book and headed to my first class of the day. I waved Jimmy off and took my seat. I took a look at the board. The problem of the day was already written. I pulled out my notebook and got to work.
It was a Three variable optimization problem, but with our formula, it wasn’t too bad.

I was about 3/4ths of the way through when I hear the door open. In walks Kari. I furrow my eyebrow. She said she wasn’t good at math.
I shrug and continue. I hear her set her things down on the only open seat and unfold her desk.
I hear her scribbling. I turn and take a peek. She’s already done. I finish up my own work and turn to look at hers.
What the hell? This isn’t even my work. This is probably Emily’s work by the look of it.
But the problem is, I can barely understand it.
I take a closer look. From what I can tell, she’s revolutionizing calculus.
What she’s done in 5 minutes took Emily Three weeks.

I take a closer look. I notice something. She’s using her own formulas and equation. I can’t even pronounce half of them.
But what’s even stranger is that they’re so beautifully simple yet make so much sense.

The teacher walks over and takes it from her. She takes a look and raises an eyebrow. She walks to the board and writes it down.
She erases our problem of the day. “Let’s solve it Kari’s way. It looks like we’ve been outdone.”

Kari blushed. I grinned. Kari may not have been special when she got here, but she definitely is now.

The teacher started explaining, but I didn’t have to pay attention. I understood it almost immediately. It was just so beautifully simple.

The teacher talks about the applications it has. From what I can tell, it can help shorten the time of space missions and maybe even make interstellar possible.
I started thinking of other applications. It could be used to calculate the efficiency of machinery. Or the aerodynamics of cars and planes. Heck, it could be used to chart weather patterns for years to come.

That was when I started to feel it. This feeling of absolutes dread.
If Kari came up with this in one class, what else can she come up with?
What else can she do?

The bell rang. I stood up and packed my things. I turned and walked over to Kari who was packing her own things.

“Hey Kari. You’re really cool.”

Kari smiled “Thanks, Adam.”

I smiled back “No problem. Let’s grab lunch.”

Kari smiled “I’d like that.”

I walked her to her next class. I watched her walk in before heading to my own class. It was advanced psychology, and before this it was my favorite class. But now I couldn’t help but think of Kari.

How is she affected?
Is she like the rest of us?
Or is she different?

The teacher walked in and started talking. I payed a bit of attention, but still couldn’t help but think of Kari.
I started to imagine all the things she could do. What else could she find out?
I felt that feeling again. I tried to shake it.

The bell rang. I stood up and grabbed my things. I walked out of class and headed to the cafeteria.
I saw Jimmy, Matt and Chris. Jimmy waved me over. I walked over. Chris asked “How was psych class.”

I took a seat “It was okay. Nothing important.”

Jimmy looked at me “You okay Adam, you seem a bit down.”

I shook my head “Yeah, I’m okay. Kari’s just kinda overwhelming.”

Matt asked “What do you mean?”

I sighed “Did you guys hear what she did in calc 2?”

Chris whistled “Yeah, that’s some Emily level stuff.”

Jimmy shook his head “She’s cooler than Emily.”

I nodded “Yeah. And It’s only been 2 hours. What will she do for the rest of the day?”

Chris started cutting his chicken nuggets. Matt started eating his sandwich.
Jimmy took a drink of his juice.
I opened my Tupperware. Only Jimmy saw. He raised an eyebrow. I shrugged.

I started eating. Jimmy asked “You made lunch?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I gotta save up for a car”

Jimmy chuckled “It’s not bad. But thanks for the compliment.”

We talked for a bit longer. It was nice. It was just a normal lunch.

The bell rang. We all stood up and grabbed our things. I waved them off. I grabbed my things and walked to my next class.

It was advanced world history. I walked in and I immediately saw Kari. She’s sitting in the front, next to Emily.
I walked over to my seat and sat. I looked over at Kari. She was talking to Emily.
I couldn’t hear it, but by the look on Emily’s face, it wasn’t good.
I saw Kari hand her a paper. Emily took it and started reading.
Kari was talking, but I couldn’t hear it.
I saw tears fall down Emily’s face. Kari gave her a hug.

I felt that feeling again, except this time it was intensified.
I tried to shake it, but I couldn’t.
I looked away. I pulled out my notebook and got to work on the problem of the day.
I was about 3/4ths of the way through when I heard Kari and Emily talk.
They were talking about physics. I took a peek.
What Kari
