As a software engineer, I went to a social gathering with a bunch of office workers and got asked “what do you do?”

They all went quiet after I replied “I’m in IT”. And they all assumed I was some genius. But the looks on their faces when I corrected them and said “Well, I’m just a line worker”, “I work in manufacturing” “I’m a blue collar worker, I work hard and I’m not an IT architect or a manager” was priceless.

Shortly after that, I went to a bar. I went home with a guy and we’re still together. But he didn’t want me for my job, he just wanted me for me.

Never ever let anyone lead you believe that you’re ‘above a blue collar job’. People don’t look for blue collar workers because they’re not as status-y as some posh IT architect, but if you’re not when you’re white collared… then you’re nothing.

I’m blue collar for life. But make sure you’re in a high-income blue collar job if you want to feel that status.
