My pro-gun parents think I’m crazy for not getting a concealed carry permit for college

I’m planning on going out of state for my freshman year of college, and one of the few things my parents and I don’t see eye to eye on is carrying. My dad has had a concealed carry permit for a few years, and before that was open carrying regularly. He got me into guns when I was younger, and I’ve gone shooting with him several times, though not in the past few years.

I’ve never been particularly comfortable with the idea of carrying a gun, and I’ve expressed this to him several times. I feel that, in the heat of the moment, I might not have the best judgment, and that could lead to a bad situation, especially since I have no formal training.

He’s also talked to me about using a gun for home defense, but I tell him that I just don’t feel comfortable with the idea of killing someone just for breaking in. I’m not really sure what I would do in a home defense situation, but I feel like I’d probably panic and not be able to bring myself to use it.

My dad feels that carrying a gun will make me safer, and he’s even offered to pay for the permit and training, but I feel like it would just be stressful to carry on campus and that it would give me a false sense of security; I know he’s nuts about guns, but I don’t feel like a gun would make me safer at all. His main argument is that he would feel safer knowing I was armed and my argument is that I would feel more comfortable knowing I’m not.

Am I completely crazy for not wanting to carry on campus? Or am I justified in not wanting to carry when I’m not comfortable with it?
