Why do Hindus say that we should be vegetarians?

The basic reason that Hindus avoid meat is not so much because the cow is sacred as many people believe, but because of the philosophy of cause and effect and the law of karma and reincarnation. Hindus are not vegetarians just because cows are sacred but primarily because of the philosophy of non-violence towards all living entities.
