When I was 18 I worked for 4 months at Caffe Nero. I worked as a barista there, and I saw just how much money they made on their food. I was given a staff card which I could use to buy free food and drink from the cafe. The only problem was that the staff cards had your name on them and you had to have the same card for your whole time in employment there.

I convinced two of my co-workers, who also had staff cards, to let me use theirs on my days off. This meant that I had three cards that I could use to steal food from the cafe.

Every Saturday morning, I would go in at 6am and buy a few sausage rolls, a few chocolate croissants, a few paninis and a few panettone cakes. All of the food was pre-packaged so it was just a case of swiping the card, taking the food, putting it in a bag and taking it out to my car.

I would do this three times a day, at 6am, 2pm and 10pm, with a 10 minute gap between each steal, just incase any of the other staff members noticed three identical transactions being made in a short space of time.

I would sell the food at school, where the students would pay £1 per item, which was the price we were supposed to sell them for in the cafe anyway. I would then use the money I made to buy the ingredients to make weed brownies, which I would then sell at school for £2.50 each.

I did this for four months. And in that time, I stole 468 items of food and made a total of £702 from the stolen goods. Which, in today's money (considering inflation), would be the equivalent of stealing £934 worth of food and making £1178.

By the time I finished working there, I had spent all of my money and was left with no savings and no money for university. But it was fun.
