A man on the radio said he got beat up for wearing earbud headphones in a rough neighborhood. Do we really have to worry about that?

The guy said he was walking alone in a bad area in New York City. A man approached him, took his headphones, and said that they were "thug headphones" and wore Airpods or the Apple earbuds because "those were for rich people." This story has me very confused. Why do certain earbuds signify wealth?
