I've been reading this article and I've been intrigued by this paragraph.

At length, in the spring of 1782, Washington authorized Brigadier General Anthony Wayne, a restless and brave Pennsylvanian known for his tactical brilliance, to lead a force of 1,000 soldiers to Georgia and dislodge the British. Wayne recruited hundreds of volunteers, mostly freemen of color, freed slaves and others who were willing to fight the British in exchange for land and freedom. "Black men were even coaxed into joining Wayne's army by the promise of freedom," writes historian Kevin D. Greene.
