I'm a 24 year old woman with short hair and agency representation. I have been actively looking at jobs for the past 6 months to upgrade my career. I was interviewing at multiple companies and at the end of last week I found out I was one of two finalists for a job I really wanted. The problem was that the agency didn't want to tell me why I was not getting the gig and just gave me a bunch of vague reasons. I decided to do something about it.

Monday I met with the agency and told them to put me back in the running and to cancel the offer with the other candidate. They asked me why I thought I should get another chance. I explained that I had gone on reddit and read posts about what makes recruiters hate the candidates they interview. I explained that I had a meeting with the CEO & co-founder and felt like it went really well and that I asked them really good questions, was engaged, and had something to say about every topic that they brought up. I even asked them questions about their personal life.

Then I asked the recruiter to tell me the real reason I didn't get the job as I was done playing games. She told me that the CEO didn't think that I looked professional enough. I was wearing a Nordstrom dress with the sleeves rolled down and a cardigan from Ann Taylor. I asked her what specifically about me made me look unprofessional. She said "I don't know but the CEO made a comment about your hair and how he didn't think you looked serious enough for the role."

So I decided to game his ableism by buying the perfect long red wig to make me look as serious and professional as possible. I got a second interview with the CEO, met with him and two hours later got an offer. I called the recruiter and told her that I got the job. She was confused until I told her that I wore a wig. She said that was kinda messed up but was not surprised. She offered me a full time job at the agency but I turned the offer down.

The CEO, who's name is Mark, called the agency and was asking who my other interviews were with. He said that was highly unprofessional and that I was not the right candidate for the job. He even went on and on about how I didn't even look like the candidate he interviewed the first time. The CEO went on to say that what I did was manipulative and that I abused the system.

I told Mark that he abused the system by judging me based on my appearance. He said "well I own the company." I told him to take his offer and shove it. He even went on to say I was not professional and that I needed to take responsibility for the fact that I am a woman with short hair. He told me that I should not blame him for the "shortcomings" of my gender and appearance.

AITA for wearing a wig to an interview?
