Japan is the biggest market for anime, and this is not changing anytime soon.

EDIT: please don't quote the entire post when you reply.

I've been seeing a lot of these "america is the biggest market ftw" posts ranging from "japan will stop speaking japanese" to "japan will make anime only for Americans from now on".

I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the quality of the average Reddit post, but this sort of post shouldn't be making it out of the drafts, let alone onto the front page.

First off, let's pretend that anime is a good market for america. This is not the case. Even the biggest anime is nowhere near the average blockbuster movie or AAA game. The american market is one of the biggest markets in the world for most of what these companies produce, which is the same stuff sold in their home market, not anime.

Next, let's pretend that Americans will be making these anime. This is again not the case. Even if there is an american company behind an anime, the people in charge of making the anime are still japanese. This is a japanese industry, there is no equivalent in America, and there is no animating infrastructure in place to support such an industry.

Let's pretend these two non-issues were solved. Are the japanese suddenly going to stop making anime for their own people and only make it for americans? They won't be "making anime for westerners" anymore? The only difference between "anime for americans" and "anime for westerners" is who they are selling it to, americans are still westerners.

And if the japanese are suddenly going to stop speaking japanese and start making their own entertainment in english exclusively for americans, why would we care enough to invade a small island nation to make it happen so that we wouldn't have to pay for translators?

Half of these dumb posts are also centered around this delusion that "anime" is inherently a good thing that everyone likes. You have to be extremely online to believe that. Nobody in my real life gives a shit about anime, and half of the people I know don't even know what it is.

We are not special. Just because you like anime doesn't mean that you are special, your hobby doesn't make you special, the fact that you have a hobby doesn't make you special, and the biggest anime companies don't give a shit about this subreddit, the people who post on it, or the people who use it to find shows to watch.

These delusions need to be dropped, and we need to stop pretending we are something we are not.
