Forgive the ignorance

So I work in the oil field, more specifically well intervention and coiled tubing. As of right now, most oil companies are at historic lows. So my question is, why at every news report, CEO speeches, and all the rest, they still say that we are working to be more environmentally friendly, and making a switch to renewable energies as a company. But why would a privately owned company spend money that is not profitable now to do so? What is the timeline on that.
