My parents are divorced, but my Dad still works for my Mom. I’m worried what will happen when she retires.

My parents divorced years ago, and as far as I know neither of them has ever dated again.

My dad works in my mom’s office.

I’m not sure what Dad does exactly, but I’ve heard him mention that he volunteers his time. Apparently he’s done it for as long as I can remember.

My mom seems to have a lot of faith in him, even though she usually seems annoyed to see him.

She always makes sure Dad has his own desk to use, so he can work in comfort.

Dad doesn’t have a computer. He usually writes on a whiteboard with a marker. He has a rocking chair at his desk and takes breaks by looking out the window. Or taking a nap.

She makes sure Dad gets his breaks and that he eats. He gets upset if he doesn’t get his lunch at the same time every day.

I think she’s happy he’s occupied and usually quiets on the days he works.

I’ve never been in Mom’s office before. I’m not allowed. But I have a feeling Dad spends most of his time looking at himself in a mirror.

My friend Tommy’s dad works in the same office. I’ve heard him mention that my mom seems nice, but his dad gets on his nerves.

I’ve always wondered what he means.

I wonder if it will be me working in Mom’s office when she retires.

I’m okay with that.
