How do I do that magic realist thing?

I've been a science fiction guy forever. I've written science fiction stories, games, comics, and even film scripts. But now, I'm working on a fantasy game, and it leans toward magic realism. <br><br>Magic realism is that whole thing where magic is real, but it's also mundane. It's normal. Everyone is used to it. People don't get excited when you show them something magical, any more than they would get excited when you show them a toaster.<br><br>The best example I have is from the movie **Big Fish**, where the main character finds out his father was BFFs with a werewolf, and there's a party, and the werewolf is there, and he's a great dancer, and stayed late to help clean up. It's like he's the uncle from the other side of the family. Everyone loves him. And the main character says, "So what, was your friend a werewolf?" And his father is like, "Oh yeah, but not all the time."<br><br>That's magic realism. It's like the werewolf was a guy who was proud of what he did for a living, or had diabetes, or something. It's just a trait. No magic lightning bolts, no spells, no strange creatures, no evil plot to destroy the world or enslave humanity. Just, hey, my friend is a werewolf, but only on full moons, and before then, he gets irritable and likes to stayed home. But he's a great dancer.<br><br>So how do I do that? How do I make magic seem normal? What are the tropes, the conventions, the tricks, the cliches, the archetypes? How do I make magic boring? <br><br>Or am I just misunderstanding what magic realism is?<br><br>And this is for a game, not a novel, so it's not just about how I write it. It's about what I include, and what I don't include.
