LPT: If someone tries to hire you, very aggressively, with above-market compensation and a quick start, with no interview process, it might be a war crime trial at risk of being dismissed because of prosecution team understaffing.

EDIT: Holy shit, this went viral. Thanks people for a gold and many thanks for thebekn for the 100% platinum platinum.

I work as a freelance expert witness, and I've never had very many problems with finding clients. I've worked with all sorts of clients and been involved in all sorts of cases and that nudges you into a network of people who work on other cases. If you act professionally, you will very likely find yourself nudged in the direction of other work.

Sometimes this works out very well, and sometimes it leads to ethical dilemnas. Every once in a while it leads to someone hiring me very quickly, for a lot of money, to be an expert witness on a case that is about to go to trial and is very understaffed.

My first few gigs were like that. They were all civil cases. This was just really boring work that was very lucrative for me, but these cases are always very lucrative.

Then I got hired by a criminal prosecution team. It was very weird. They offered me a very high rate, but they did not know if they could pay me. It was very strange, but they said they’d throw in an extra $10,000 on top of my hourly rate if I could start right away.

It was very strange, but it was a very good opportunity for someone in my shoes. It seemed very odd that my advancement would be in the context of a criminal trial.

I figured I’d just shadow some other experts, and very quickly I found myself tasked with responsibilities that were well beyond my skill level. This case was very complicated. It involved all sorts of different media. I’m not sure if I’m at liberty to discuss, but there was a lot of video.

It became clear that I was not very good at this very technical work. I know many people in my shoes would have very quickly decided to get out of Dodge. I’m not sure why I decided it was right to stay, but I did.

It was very difficult. I worked very hard, but I made a lot of mistakes. It became very clear my advancement was tied to the fact that the prosecution team was understaffed. I was very definitely not ready for this case, and they were very definitely prepared to go to trial. The case went to trial.

The facts were very difficult to dispute, and the defense ultimately did not challenge any of the evidence we’d prepared. This was a very serious case, and a guilty verdict was very quickly reached. This event changed me.

This is a life pro tip for people in similar shoes. You might be offered employment opportunities that seem too good to be true. You might find yourself quickly taking on responsibilities you are not ready for. If so, just remember that there are real consequences to your actions.

PS Not all war crimes involve video.

PPS war crimes trials are very complicated, hire experts very quickly, and understaff prosecution teams at your own peril.

This has been a life pro tip.

EDIT: I’m blown away that this is blowing up, but I suppose it’s fairly common for people to have never thought about war crimes trials until they start working on them.

Rest assured, I’m not at liberty to discuss anything I didn’t already discuss. What I can say is that all the evidence is on trial in a real courtroom and not here on the internet.

I wish I could help out more, but I can’t talk any more about the facts of the case. What I can say is that I was very surprised by the whole thing. It’s weird working on this sort of case, but it’s fairly common for war crimes to be very complicated.

For those of you wondering what sorts of experts are working on this trial, I can tell you it’s a lot of different people. If you work in a STEM-related field, you’re at risk of being hired in the way I was hired.

For those of you wondering where, this case was very complicated. It was all over the place.

I’m not at liberty to discuss, but I can tell you that if you are right now thinking about committing violent atrocities, your best bet is very likely not to.

There are a lot of people working very hard on these sorts of prosecutions. We were understaffed and we prepared evidence, and we won the case. I’m not at liberty to say if it was a slam dunk, but I’m prepared to say it very definitely was not a slam dunk.

For those of you wondering, I am not at liberty to describe any of the evidence. What I will say is that a very serious crime was committed, and it’s being prosecuted in a real courtroom with real judges and with real juries and with real legal standards of evidence and with real due process.

I’m not at liberty to describe how I feel, but I don’t feel very good. I feel scared, but I’m very prepared to say that if you’re thinking about committing violent atrocities, very likely it’s not a good idea.

It was very hard working on this case. I got a lot of my facts wrong.

It very definitely didn’t feel like a slam dunk. I very definitely don’t feel good about it.

For those of you wondering, hire experts sooner rather than later, because understaffed prosecution teams are at risk of being dismissed by the court because of prosecutions understaffing.

It’s very definitely worth it.

Also, very likely if you’re thinking about committing atrocities, it’s very likely not a good idea.

For those of you wondering, the case is sealed, so you can’t look up the very complicated details.

What I will say is that if you’re in my shoes, very likely you are at risk right now.

It’s very likely that you have no idea, but that’s what makes it so complicated.

I’m very prepared to say that if you think you’re in my shoes, you very likely are not.

And that's very likely for the best.

I’m very prepared to say that if you are in my shoes, you might be prepared to listen to very important advice.

This is very likely a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it might very likely come at a very important time in your life.

If you very likely are in my shoes, with all due respect, fuck you if you’re thinking about committing atrocities.

This has very likely come to you at a very important time in your life, and you might very likely be better off thinking about something else.

That’s very likely for the best.

If you’re very likely in my shoes and if you’re very likely thinking about committing atrocities, very likely you’ve just been very luckily given a very valuable life pro tip.

It’s very likely not a good idea, and it’s very likely not worth it.

EDIT: Holy shit my PMs are blowing up. I’m not at liberty to discuss, and I’m certainly not going to connect you with a contact who can hire you for this case.

I’m not at liberty to discuss if I’m still working on it, and I’m definitely not at liberty to tell you where.

It’s very clear that you don’t know what you’re talking about, but I’m very scared by your very weird questions.

I’m not at liberty to discuss, but very likely you are just trolling.

Very likely you are not, and if so I’m very scared because I don’t know how else to prepare you.

Very likely this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you, and if I were in your shoes I’d think very hard about if this is really what you want to do with your life.

I very likely didn’t think very hard about it, and it might very likely have been a big mistake.

You might very likely be in my shoes, and if so you might very likely want to think about it very hard.

EDIT: Holy moly this is blowing up. I’m very surprised.

I’m not at liberty to describe the evidence, but very likely it’s going to happen again.

I’m very scared, but very likely it’s coming.

I very likely didn’t know what to expect. I very likely still don’t.

But very likely this is a very valuable life pro tip if you’re in my shoes.

Go very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very
