The next president should commit to eliminating the student loan debt of all nurses and doctors who spend 5 years in a low income area. In exchange the government would eliminate the medical school debt of all nurses and doctors.

A day after Christmas the rural hospital near my hometown stopped delivering babies. They had no staff.

Our country is coming closer and closer to the crisis point. I recently read a report on rural hospitals, 336 were in imminent danger of closing. Another 600 were on life support. As we all know the problems with staffing have caused a lot of this. But it seems like the staffing shortages are becoming a tipping point.

Maybe the next president should run on the promise to eliminate all the medical school debt of doctors who agreed to work in low income areas for 5 years. It makes sense. I grew up in an area with several rural hospitals. It doesn't make any sense for the government to pay half a million dollars for someone to be trained in a skill they don't use. I know that's a cynic view, but the government training someone in a skill they don't use seems like a waste of money.

Now I'm sure the medical school lobby would fight this, but it makes sense. I'm sure there are plenty of doctors who would take this offer, especially if they were allowed to apply it to past debt.

And I know student loans are a big issue this election. But it seems like only addressing the medical debt would be focusing on the biggest problem.
