Perfectly innocent thing I say to my students has been misinterpreted by parents and now I'm being investigated

I'm a male middle school English teacher. On Monday while students were doing an activity where I was walking around looking over students' shoulders to see what they were working on, I said (to a female student) "You can do anything you want to do. You're so smart and good at English."

Well, I guess she didn't hear all of that because yesterday I got a call from my principal explaining that the girl's parents came in to see him on Tuesday morning because she told them that I had said "You can do anything you want to do" and they thought that was inappropriate.

I can't tell you how pissed off I am. I have never been accused of anything like this before and it really feels like no one even believes me. My principal basically said that he has to look into it because the parents "would not leave" until he promised he would look into it. I don't know if the parents wanted me to be fired or not.

This is bullshit.
