What did women do all day for most of human history?

Women have been stereotyped as perpetually busy with the never-ending list of domestic chores, but in reality most of human history, women seem to have quite a bit of free time. For example, spinning was one of the main time consuming tasks for women.

But on the other hand, we have evidence of spinners being able to produce multiple spindles of yarn in a single day. Even if we assume they worked from dawn to dusk.

This is true for most women's work throughout history. They seem to have plenty of time to be bored, play games, go outside, have a chatty conversation with the next door neighbor, etc.

I've read some accounts of women's diaries from the 18th-19th centuries, and they never seem to write anything about housework. Most of the time they write about how boring their lives are, with nothing to do.

It seems to me that with the invention of the washing machine, women's chores did decrease. But on the other hand, they were expected to keep their houses spotless and buy into consumerism.
