When you get a new haircut, tell them you want your hair cut like "you don't care" rather than tame or neat.

This was actually a suggestion from one of my friends who is a hairstylist. You can still request whatever length or the particular style you want, but when they ask how you want the hair to look at the end, tell them you want it to look like "you don't care" rather than tame, neat, or well-kept. I've found that my hair is both healthier and looks better with this.

Edit: I've gotten a lot of comments lately along the lines of "this is the laziest thing I've ever heard" and "this is a stupid little phrase to put into my daily vocabulary". It's definitely not for everyone, but if it can help a couple of people, I guess the post was a success.

For those who are wondering, my friend told me this three years ago and I've been getting my hair cut like this ever since. It's meant to convey to the hairdresser that you want them to stop doing things to your hair once they've gotten the length/style right. It's what works for me, but I know not everyone has the same hair as me, so use it as you want.
