If you are planning on traveling to Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc) with a pretty young child (under 4-5) how did you do it? What made it enjoyable?

I have a 3 year old son, and my wife is expecting another child in May.

We are planning on a 7-10 day trip to Japan next year (we live in San Francisco) and will likely have both a 4 year old and 7 month old child with us. I’ve heard Japan is a great place for kids, but am curious to hear from people who have done it with kids. What made it enjoyable, what were the challenges, what did you do so that the family had a great time there.

My kids are still very young so they are so curious about a lot of things, and are generally pretty happy going on adventures, but I am terrified that we will spend a lot of $$ on plane tickets, and that we will have a miserable time traveling with them over 5k miles.

Please drop any tips or suggestions you have, and if you have any successful itinerary suggestions for a trip with a 4 year old and a 7 month old, I’d love to see it.

TIA! ?
