Crazy things that happen while working at UPS

I wasn't sure where to start in my ramble, so I'll do the best I can. I've been working with UPS for a few years and it's one of the craziest places to work ever. Obviously, I didn't include names, just to protect people, even though I doubt they read reddit. Anyway, here we go, in no particular order.

1: I had a coworker break his arm after getting his hand caught in a conveyor belt, and still had to fight for workmans comp.

2: Had another coworker get her head crushed by the doors closing to go on the ramp. She was okay, but there was a lot of blood.

3: When you walk on to the job, you're told that you could be fired for *any* reason, at *any* time for *any* reason. Your bosses favorite reason for firing people? "Other". He gave this reason to someone who had been with the company for over 15 years. The reason for the termination? He smelled bad. Apparently he had been living in his car and no one knew about it. When someone asked the boss for context on why the guy smelled so bad, the boss didn't even let the guy finish his sentance before he fired him.

4: I had a coworker quit one day because they didn't want to be there anymore. Then he came back to work like 2 weeks later, but he was wearing a suit and holding a briefcase. He had been hired by UPS corporate to do an "audit" on the facility and make sure everything was running smoothly. It wasn't and he ended up getting 2 people fired and one demoted.

5: Any packages that are lost or damaged past the point of recognition go to a secret room deep in the facility that no one really knows about unless your in a specific department. From what I've heard, it's a complete treasure trove in there.

6: If we find open packages, we can take whatever is in them. I've found a couple of pretty nice knives, a mirror with some drugs residue on it, and a shit ton of electronics.

7: The UPS facility is huge and sometimes packages just get lost. The lost package room is very small, so we usually just throw the really large boxes that don't have anywhere to go in some corner or room and forget about it. I've found a few really large boxes full of shit that have been there for so long the labels have faded.

8: Rip cords are really fun to play with. I've had them explode in my hands and deafen me, and I've had them get stuck to my pant leg and hit me in the balls at random.

9: My boss had a very noticable stutter, but only when he was talking to his bosses. The rest of the time, he could talk just fine.

10: We had a forklift accident not too long ago. The driver was driving down an aisle when he misjudged a corner turn and crashed into the shelving. It fell on top of him and killed him. He was a cool guy and everyone liked him. That was a bad day.

11: When you first start working with UPS, obviously you need to be trained. So you get shown around the facility, taught how to do your job, and you have a trainer with you while you get the hang of it. Well, my trainer was very nice and cool, but she was also very dumb. She couldn't read very well, so she relied on me to read the labels on the packages and tell her where they needed to go. I was still new and didn't really know where to send the packages, but if I told her that she would go ask someone else, and then I felt useless, so I just started making shit up. I'd just look at the name and try to decide where to send it based on the name alone, not the address or anything. I swear at least half the packages I sent that night were delivered to the wrong city.

12: We have special people to deal with the really big boxes. They ride around the facility 24/7 on these special forklifts made for really big boxes, and they deliver the big boxes to where they need to go. Well, one of these guys was driving down an aisle and misjudged the height of the box. He drove into a low pipe and knocked himself out. The box landed on him and broke both his legs.

OK so that's my ramble for tonight. I might add more tomorrow depending on how much interest this gets.

EDIT: WOW! This blew up way more than I thought it would. I'll try to update this list as much as I can, but I only use reddit on my phone and this is getting harder to update. I'll put updates at the bottom in italic, since that seems to be the thing to do.

*UPDATE*

*If you're wondering what department I'm in, everyone keeps telling me I'm a "transload", whatever the fuck that means. The bosses just call me a "package handler".*

*There's a lot of comments about the lady who was crushed by the doors. I just want to say that she 100% survived and has since been transferred to a different facility. She's doing fine, and is actually still working with UPS. I don't know why everyone is so concerned about her.*

*Someone asked about the names of the 2 guys who got injured by the forklifts. I don't know their real names, but everyone calls the first forklift guy "Trevor" and the second forklift guy "Mr. T thyroid". I don't know why.*

*There's a lot of comment about the facilities size. I'm not exactly sure how big it is, I just know that it takes me around 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other.*

*I know someone asked about my bosses name, but I didn't catch it. I know he's in charge of half the facility though.*

*The lady who quit, then got hired back on got a new boss pretty quickly. He's a lot more relaxed then the last guy, but still a hardAss.*

*The secret room I talked about is only for really big, valuable items, like cars and shit.*

*I'll try to update more later.*
