My brother killed himself 3 weeks ago. He was the byproduct of our parent's affair and although he had a rough upbringing he was well loved. He had a lot of mental health problems and struggled with addiction. He was only 32.

Before he died he wrote a series of letters, one was to be opened after his death. He said where he wanted his remains to go, how he wanted his funeral to go, he even request a closed casket which my parents refused. He also asked that all his belongings went to me.

My brother spent most his life moving from one place to another, so he didn't have to much. But he had some money saved up and a few personal items like his guitar. Being the well respected people they are in our community, they refuse to let me have his things saying it's offensive and my brother was mentally ill and didn't know what he was asking. I tried going to my grandparents but they said they couldn't get involved.

I took my brother's things from his girlfriend's house and she was more than happy to let me have them. I told my parents what I did and they called the police on me. The police came but saw I had the letter my brother wrote and they wouldn't take anything from me. They even told my parents to respect his wishes.

They haven't spoken to me since but they keep calling me asking for my brothers belongings. AITA for not giving them his stuff?
