LPT: If you're going to start a tab at a restaurant with only one drink, and you're going to order a soft drink, tell the server that it will be on you (the tab) when you finish, and they won't have to wait for you to pay for it in cash. This will save them time and you might make their day.

I saw this advice on another sub and it's something that I have been practicing and it has been nice to get that gesture of kindness from servers as well. I usually get a water, and sometimes will order a lemonade or something. I'll tell them "this will be on our tab, thanks!" and they always seem so appreciative.
