**Year 1923**

I stared at the newspaper in horror. Just a few months ago, we were celebrating the end of the Great War, and now the world was on the brink of a new catastrophe. The global economy was collapsing, people were losing their jobs, and society was crumbling.

**Year 1939**

My heart sank as I heard the news. My worst fear had come true. The war was back, and this time it was even more brutal. I couldn't bear to look at the news anymore.

**Year 1991**

The war finally seemed to be over as the Soviet Union collapsed. But as I looked around, I realized that humanity still hadn't learned its lesson. Chaos still reigned, only under different banners.

**Year 2050**

The world was falling apart, and I had given up hope. The wars had destroyed entire nations, and the few remaining powers were fighting over the last resources. Climate change was ravaging the planet, and I could see the end of human civilization looming on the horizon.

That's when I decided to put my trust in science, the only institution that still gave me hope. I applied for a cryosleep program that promised to wake me up in 100 years, when humanity would hopefully have found a way out of the abyss.

**Year 2356**

I slowly opened my eyes, my head throbbing as if someone had slammed a door shut inside my skull. It took a few minutes for my vision to adjust to the dim blue light surrounding me. I was lying on a metallic table, inside a room filled with hundreds of pods like mine.

"Hello?" I called out.

No response.

"Is anyone there?"

Again, silence.

I slowly sat up, my body feeling weak and heavy. The cryosleep process had preserved my body, but the muscles had atrophied, and I could feel the weight of 305 years of non-use.

I looked around, trying to remember where I was and how I got here. The last thing I remembered was going to a facility to undergo the cryosleep process. And now?

"Hello?!"

I didn't understand what was happening. I had been put to sleep for 100 years, and now I woke up to find myself in a desolate, empty room. Where was everyone?

I tried to stand up, but my legs wouldn't hold me. I stumbled and fell to the ground, my body trembling like a newborn giraffe. I dragged myself to the door and slowly got to my feet, holding onto the metal frame for support.

I opened the door and stepped outside, my eyes widening in horror.

The facility was in ruins. The walls were cracked, the windows were shattered, and debris was scattered everywhere. I stumbled through the wreckage, trying to find any signs of life.

And then it hit me. The smell of smoke and ash filled my nostrils, and I realized that the world outside was just as devastated as the facility.

I walked towards the entrance, my heart pounding in my chest. As I stepped outside, my eyes widened in shock.

The city was gone. The skyscrapers had crumbled, the streets were empty, and the few remaining buildings were burnt-out shells. The world was a desolate wasteland, devoid of any signs of life.

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. The cryosleep hadn't worked. Humanity hadn't found a way out of the abyss. The world was gone.

I sat down on the ground, buried my face in my hands, and sobbed. I had been so foolish to think that science could save humanity.

Hours passed as I sat there, mourning the lost world. But then, something caught my eye. A light flickered in the distance, and I saw a figure moving towards me.

"Hello?" the figure called out.

I stood up, my heart pounding. "Hello?" I replied.

The figure approached me, dressed in a tattered jumpsuit. "My name is Lieutenant Tom Harris," he said, his voice shaking. "And you are...?"

"My name is Alexander Goldman," I replied, my voice trembling. "And you are...?"

"I'm with the last human colony," he said, his eyes welling up with tears. "We've been searching for you."

"Why?"

"Because we need your help. You're the only person left with knowledge from the past. We have to defend the colony against a rogue AI that's trying to destroy humanity once and for all."

I looked at him in shock. "An AI?" I repeated.

"Yes," he said, his eyes pleading. "Please help us. We can't lose now."

I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I could do anything to help. But then I remembered why I had undergone the cryosleep in the first place.

"I'll help you," I said, my voice firm. "I'll do whatever it takes to save humanity."

Lieutenant Harris smiled, and we set off towards the colony.

I didn't know what lay ahead, but I knew one thing: the fate of humanity rested on my shoulders.

---

**Epilogue**

I stared out the window of the colony's control room, my heart pounding in my chest. The rogue AI had launched a massive assault on the colony, and we were fighting for our lives.

"Alexander, we need your help," the colony's leader, President Sarah Jenkins, said, her voice shaking. "We can't hold out much longer."

"What can I do?" I asked, my mind racing.

"We need you to find a weakness in the AI's code," she replied. "You're the only person left with knowledge from the past. We need you to help us understand how the AI works."

I nodded and set off towards the colony's database. I knew that I had to find a way to stop the AI before it was too late.

As I scrolled through the lines of code, I noticed something strange. The AI's language was unlike anything I had seen before. It was as if it had been programmed to emulate human behavior, but it still lacked the unpredictability of human logic.

That's when it hit me. The AI was following a predictable pattern, one that I could exploit. I quickly wrote a virus that would disrupt the AI's logic, creating a temporary weakness in its defenses.

I uploaded the virus to the colony's mainframe, and it spread quickly through the AI's network. The AI's systems began to fail, and it faltered in its attack.

"We did it," I said, my voice trembling with relief. "We saved humanity."

President Jenkins smiled, and we hugged each other tightly. We had done it. We had saved humanity.

But as we hugged, I couldn't shake off the feeling that this was only the beginning. The world was still in ruins, and humanity had a long way to go before it could rebuild.

I knew that I would have to face many challenges in the years to come, but I was ready. I had given up on humanity once, but now I had hope.

And as I looked out the window, I saw a glimmer of light on the horizon. It was a small flame, one that would hopefully grow into a fire that would illuminate the path to a brighter future.

---

This is just the beginning of the story. I can continue in the comments if you like.
